The BJP had promised to double farmers’ incomes but ended up doubling inflation in the country, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Akhilesh Yadav said on Monday.

“The lotus (electoral symbol) of the BJP grows in a quagmire of lies and deception,” Yadav added, attacking the ruling party in Uttar Pradesh and the Center.

“The BJP government has forgotten its manifesto. It had promised to double the incomes of farmers, but it has doubled inflation in the country,” he said at a press conference here.

“Farmers are not getting the right price for their produce. A farmer burned his rice crop at a shopping center in Lakhimpur. Farmers want to know if they will get the price they are owed. There is no one (from the government) to answer, ”says Yadav.

The crops have been destroyed by the rains and the prices of gasoline, diesel, insecticides and pesticides are rising. But the government has no answer to these questions, he said, adding that “BJP leaders cannot see an increase in inflation.”

The government sells airports, ports, land and other things to private operators, and corruption is at its peak in the current UP regime, the SP chief said.

Yadav further said that as parliamentary elections in the UP and Punjab approach, the BJP may withdraw the agricultural laws and re-introduce a new law after the elections.
