Grimmway Farms baby carrots pulled up for salmonella risk

Grimmway Farms is voluntarily recalling certain carrot products for possible Salmonella contamination.

According to the recall notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration website, six products are included in the recall under the Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, O Organics and Grimmway Farms brands.

The company, based in Bakersfield, Calif., Said no illnesses have been linked to the recall to date.

Most people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps six hours to six days after being exposed to the bacteria, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The illness usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment.

The list of stores that sold the recalled carrots was not available.

Dana Brennan, vice president of government and public affairs at Grimmway, said in a statement to USA TODAY that the company does not distribute directly to stores but to distribution centers.

“For that reason and out of caution, we are recalling it nationally,” said Brennan.

In a statement, Grimmway Farms President and CEO Jeff Huckaby said the recall was initiated following a routine internal test at the company.

In addition to the recalled items sold in stores, the company says it has “recalled certain grated carrots and chopped carrots (in pieces) that have been sold to food manufacturers and food service distributors.”

Consumers who have the recalled product should not consume it and should destroy or discard it. For more information, call 1-800-301-3101, weekdays 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.

July has been a busy month for recalls with Neutrogena and Aveeno Sunscreen, Chicken Tyson and muffins among the biggest recalls.
