New, more comprehensive Purdue event calendar offers an easy-to-use interface, interactive features, personal notifications and more

What is happening? Purdue University is introducing a more robust and fully personalized electronic central calendar that streamlines public events on the West Lafayette campus and allows the university community and general public to customize their personal schedules and event planning.

The Purdue University Events Calendar, officially launched Monday (August 8), also incorporates events beyond the Purdue campus, including public activities throughout Greater Lafayette, providing a helpful tool to promote and socialize those events. Purdue Athletics events have also been incorporated into the schedule.

“Our new dynamic Purdue University Events Calendar offers a host of features that will help our campus community organize and promote events while presenting them in a new and more meaningful way. It seems to be becoming a one-stop mall for all Purdue events,” said Brian York, senior project manager for Purdue Information Technology at Purdue (ITaP).

Events currently come from Student Activities and Organizations, Purdue Convocations, Intercollegiate Athletics, Purdue Marketing and Communications, Krannert, and Academic Calendar. Other areas will be added to the Purdue calendar throughout the fall.

Powered by a software platform developed by Localist, the Purdue Calendar integrates social media, registration, a bright new look and an easy-to-use interface, while allowing event planners to promote and share activities and programs. In addition to Purdue faculty and staff, members of the community can subscribe and receive personal reminder notifications about events that matter to them.

On events.purdue.edu, the easy-to-remember new campus calendar allows users to create their own events experience and create a personal “My Calendar” dashboard to set preferences on specific types of events and focus on upcoming trends and events. They can create an events widget that will allow users to promote events by displaying them on any web page.

The site offers a tool to filter events into specific categories such as date, whether it is an in-person or virtual experience, type of event, topic, and target audience such as the general public , students, faculty and staff, alumni and/or families of students.

With these dynamic features, users can track their college, department, student organization, or even specific buildings and event locations.

Additionally, the new calendar offers powerful search tagging and optimization functionality, making it easier than ever to find events and dates that match the interests and experience of everyone on campus.

“We find community in the daily activities on our campus and throughout Greater Lafayette. And this new Purdue calendar will help users organize their own events and keep up to date with the events that matter most to them,” York said.

A committee led by Purdue Marketing and Communications has worked for the past three months to develop and design the new calendar of events. The group included representatives from convocations, student life, athletics, marketing and communications, the Purdue for Life Foundation, ITaP and other campus units.

By creating an account through Boiler Key protocols, users can upload and submit events to the Purdue campus calendar. A user must be logged in to click the event submit button. Submissions must be approved by an event administrator.
