ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – The hot air balloon world is once again right outside the windows of Albuquerque homes near Balloon Fiesta Park, and neighbors couldn’t be more thrilled with its return. âPeople are so excited,â Trish Amlong said. âWe have people from California, Kansas, everywhere. They all come here.
Amlong has lived on San Mateo and Alameda Boulevard, less than a mile from Balloon Fiesta Park, for about 30 years and said last year’s cancellation was heartbreaking. âIt was horrible. I took a picture and sent it to all my friends who are here,â Amlong said. âThere were five balloons in the sky and my caption was, Balloon Fiesta 2020 with a sad face.”
But, with the return of these breathtaking shows, it also means thousands of visitors, street closures and a lot of traffic in the neighborhood near the international event. However, the neighbors said that they are used to it and that it comes with the territory.
âDuring the Balloon Fiesta, we kind of adjust our schedule, if you like,â said Derek Kerr. âOkay, we both have to work. It’s an adjustment, there is traffic and you just have to cope.
Despite these inconveniences, the neighbors said they wouldn’t want to be anywhere else during the Balloon Fiesta.
âThe more people there are, the more the merrier. It’s one of those things, it’s Albuquerque, right? Kerr said. “It’s a great experience, if someone hasn’t done it you have to do it and if you have, keep doing it because it’s one of those things.”
KRQE spoke with a few neighbors who didn’t want to go on camera. But told KRQE that the increase in traffic and noise from the annual event can be very frustrating to deal with throughout the 10-day event.
